LavaNet IPv6

Your IP address:

Background

LavaNet has begun a long-term project to gradually integrate IPv6 into our network infrastructure. We have connectivity to the 6Bone testbed through a tunnel to our upstream provider Sprint. We also have additional IPv6 tunnels to other IPv6-enabled sites throughout the Pacific Rim and elsewhere for increased reliability.

We will be testing and phasing in various IPv6-enabled services gradually over a very long period of time as both software and hardware becomes available which can handle it.  Common infrastructure services will first be enabled and then integrated such as internal routing, DNS, web services, etc so that these services are accessible to the 6Bone.

Because most access software and our current access server firmware are not expected to be IPv6 enabled for quite some time we do not expect to provide end users with direct IPv6 connectivity any time soon.  However, service providers and users who are 'early adopters' of new technology may want to begin testing and integrating IPv6 into their network infrastructure just as LavaNet is already doing so.  To accommodate this activity, LavaNet can provide IPv6 connectivity via a tunnel in most cases. For direct ethernet, co-location, and certain frame relay and DSL customers, native IPv6 routing can be provided if requested.

More information about IPv6 and the 6Bone may be found at www.ipv6.org and www.6bone.net.

Limitations

This experimental IPv6 routing service does not come with any official customer support. LavaNet customers wishing to participate in this program should understand they must troubleshoot IPv6-related problems on their own. Our ability to respond to IPv6 and 6Bone related questions is limited by officially supported services which take precedence.

Participants assigned IPv6 address space from LavaNet should also be aware they may have to renumber their IPv6 prefixes at some later date, particularly when we transition to production IPv6 address space.

Current Capabilities

If you don't understand what any of this means, you probably don't need to :)

Planned Future Capabilities

Not necessarily in order of priority...

Requesting connectivity and/or address space

To request an IPv6 tunnel and address space please contact the LavaNet systems department (system@lava.net) and provide the static IPv4 address of the system that will be your tunnel endpoint, a contact name, email address, and telephone number. Service providers who wish to do BGP and/or MBGP peering should also list their ASN in the email.
